Itinerary

Day 1Leh

An early morning arrival at Leh airport where you will be greeted by our company representative and transferred directly to your Leh based accommodation. After check-in spend a full day taking rest and adapting to the high altitude of Ladakh. Enjoy the surrounding mountain views and take in the local gardens before dinner and overnight stay in your preferred Leh based accommodation.

Day 2Leh - Shey - Thiksey – Hemis - Leh

A full day of architectural sightseeing and a taste of safari drives, today begins with a lesson in Ladakhi history as you visit the ancient palace of Shey which is known for being the summer retreat place for the previous Kings of Ladakh. After a short but scenic drive you will visit Thiksey Monastery which bears a striking resemblance to the ‘Potala Palace’ in Lhasa, Tibet and then proceed to Hemis Gompa which is the largest, richest and most populous monastery in all of Ladakh – boasting over 1000 active monks in its many branches. You will have a number of opportunities to take photos and learn about the monks daily routine before visiting the Hemis museum where you can see artefacts dating back to the original construction of the facility in the 11th century. Return to your Leh based accommodation in time for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3Leh - Pathar Sahib - Sangham - Magnetic Hill - Basgo - Lamayuru

Wake early and travel west of Leh to the popular ‘Hall of Fame’ war museum where you can learn about local history and pay your respects to the Indian army as you peruse the local war memorabilia. Next, make you way to the Sikh temple known as ‘Pathar Sahib’ before your stopping at the mysterious Magnetic Hill where you experience reverse gravity in action as your vehicle appears to move without power. Continue on your safari journey and arrive at the Sangham lookout where you will view the colourful intersection of the Zangskar and Indus rivers before driving through the ‘pretty-as-a-postcard’ Basgo village. Arrive at your overnight destination of Lamayuru and enjoy the views of the village which looks like something from a fairy-tale. Overnight stay in Lamayuru.

Day 4Lamayuru - Alchi - Likir - Hall of Fame - Leh

Wake early and make your way to the Lamayuru monastery for the early morning ‘puja’ with the resident monks. Watch them perform the daily rituals and chanting an then return to your accommodation for a late breakfast. After check out, take a short drive to Alchi monastery via the famous ‘moonland territory’ – so-called because of its crater-like landscape which some people say resembles the environment of the moon. Proceed to the Alchi monastery and marvel at the unique Kashmiri influenced architecture before one last holy sight for the day – the Likir gompa which is famous for its tall Buddha statue. Make the return trip back to Leh via the Indus valley and return to the Leh bazaar with free time to peruse the local handicrafts and shop for souvenirs. Overnight stay in Leh.

Day 5Rest Day

Today is kept free for you to ‘choose your own adventure’. Suggested activities include:

● A full day of white water rafting in the Indus River (absolutely suitable for beginners…)
● Hire of with a mountain bike or a motorbike and take a self guided ride throughout the region
● Shopping in the Tibetan market or Leh main bazar (The best buys in Ladakh include: authentic pashmina shawls and stoles, handwoven rugs, carpets or decorative wall hangings, locally made woollen socks, gloves, beanies or jackets, trekking gear including backpacks, clothing, boots and climbing accessories, traditional ‘chung’ pots, teapots, and singing bowls, tibetan handicraft items including prayer wheels, bowls, Buddhist masks and Thanka paintings and a variety of silver and traditional Ladakhi turquoise jewellery)
● Self guided walking tour of the old market in Leh

Day 6Leh - Disket - Hunder - Sumoor / Nubra (One way – 140 Kms , Around 5 hours travelling time per way)

Depart Leh after breakfast and head towards ‘Nubra Valley’ – popularly known as the ‘valley of flowers’ because of the variety of wildflowers and medicinal plants grown all over the local area. Situated in the northern part of Ladakh (between the Karakoram and Ladakh Himalayan ranges), the journey between Leh and Nubra takes you over ‘Khardong-la-pass’ which is the world’s highest motor-able road (located 18390 feet above sea level)! The journey to Nubra is a half-day drive of breathtaking landscapes and spectacular scenery and the experience is sure to be once-in-a-lifetime and truly unforgettable. On arrival in the Valley, you will visit the Disket monastery where you can see the 100-foot tall Buddha statue and then those who wish to enjoy an optional camel safari on Nubras resident double humped camels can climb aboard a double-humped camel in Hunder for a ride around the cold desert sand dunes. Arrive to Nubra Valley accommodation in time for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7Sumoor / Nubra - Pangong Lake (One way – 165 Kms , Around 6.30 hours travelling time per way)

Definitely a highlight of your tour, today involves an adventurous drive with a constantly scenic trip to the magnificent Pangong Lake. A must see destination for your time in Ladakh, Pangong Lake has been made famous by the ‘Three Idiots’ movie and more than half of the lake marks the separation border of India and China. The appearance of the water is said to change colour at every angle of the sun – which makes for some amazing photographs so don’t forget your camera (and spare batteries!) Overnight stay in Pangong.

Day 8Pangong Lake - Leh (One way – 140 Kms , Around 5 hours travelling time per way)

The early birds can start the morning bright and early with a sunrise view of beautiful Pangong Lake before returning to the resort for breakfast and check out. Health Note & Medicine :

Ladakh is a high altitude region and it is not uncommon for people to experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness on arrival. For this reason, we suggest clients consult their doctor before travel and if recommended, take Diamox (or a similar medication) to help with the acclimatization process. We purposely arrange a complete day of rest for the first day of all tours and our guides and drivers are well equipped to handle altitude related emergencies throughout the tour.

Most other standard medications are available in the main town of Leh, but if you prefer your own trusted brands or if you have any specific prescriptions please bring these with you for your Ladakh holiday period.

People often suffer from pulmonary oedemas and the likes as a result of not taking it easy at high altitudes

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can hit the best of us, with nausea and headaches ruining a perfectly good trip. Stay off the alcohol, ideally through the trip, but definitely while acclimatising.

Staying hydrated is incredibly important. You may not feel the need to drink water, but ensure that you intake sufficient amount of water. Don’t spend more than 20 minutes at Khardungla pass as the high altitude may hit you.

Staying Connected:

All prepaid Indian SIM cards will not work in Ladakh and due to security restrictions it is very difficult for outsiders to obtain a local SIM card. Post paid services with BSNL, Airtel and Aircel will work but we suggest relying on internet based services such as Skype, Viber, Whatsapp, Facebook or email to keep in touch.

Note: There is free WIFI in most hotels and there are plenty of internet cafes in the main bazaar, but be aware that power failures occur frequently and it is not uncommon for all satellite internet connections to be lost for up to a few days at a time.

Weather :

The best time to vacation in Ladakh is between May and September. Days are usually nice and sunny, but the nights can be quite cool. It is unlikely clients will experience much rainfall but they may get wet from snow at Khardung La or snowy areas whilst driving.

Currency :

Ladakh falls in Jammu & Kashmir and  is an integral part of India and local currency is Indian National Rupee (INR) . The credit &  debit card facilities are not always available so we suggest using local ATMs or currency exchange services at hotels or government approved vendors.

Shopping :

The best buys in Ladakh include: authentic pashmina shawls and stoles, handwoven rugs, carpets or decorative wall hangings, locally made woollen socks, gloves, beanies or jackets, trekking gear including backpacks, clothing, boots and climbing accessories, traditional ‘chung’ pots, teapots, and singing bowls, tibetan handicraft items including prayer wheels, bowls, Buddhist masks and Thangka paintings and a variety of silver and traditional Ladakhi turquoise jewellery.

Clothing:

Ladakh is a very casual although somewhat conservative although and you don’t need too many outfits as laundry services are available in the main town of Leh. As a general rule, we recommend loose fitting, lightweight materials which will be the most comfortable, plus a warm jacket or layers of warmer clothes are advised for cooler evenings and trekking trips. Suggested packing items include:

  • Pants/ trousers / long skirts or long dresses
  • Light cotton T-shirts or long-sleeved tops for wear during the day
  • Comfortable walking shoes (ones that slip on and off easily are best as shoes are not generally worn indoors) At least one warm jacket or jumper to use for the cooler evenings and late nights
  • Sunglasses / hat (useful to protect your eyes from the wind/ glare and the top of your head from the hot sun) A scarf or bandana (useful to protect your face against the dusty wind)
  • A few pairs of socks and underwear
  • Swimming costume (if you want to take a dip in the cool waters or you plan on participating in water rafting)

Other Handy Items (To be brought) :

  • A day bag to carry your important things during the daily sightseeing
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Anti-bacterial wipes / lotion
  • Tissue paper
  • Small pocket torch and spare batteries for use in the village
  • Conversion plug – with two horizontal round prongs
  • Camera and spare battery/memory card
  • Book / personal music player (for the long car rides and any free time)
  • Money belt to carry passport, cash, credit cards, airline tickets, etc.
